• Though Cardinal Ratzinger did praise the theology's intellectual underpinnings that reject violence, and, instead, " the responsibility which Christians necessarily bear for the poor and oppressed", he strongly opposed certain elements of Liberation Theology, through the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith and the Vatican twice (1984, 1986) officially condemned its acceptance of Marxism and armed violence.
