Of the 25 British war cemeteries dating from World War I, one of the six largest was built in Deir al-Balah in March 1917. بنى البريطانيون 25 مقبرةً لقتلاهم في الحرب العالمية الأولى، من بين أكبرها تلك التي بنوها في دير البلح في مارس 1917.
A year later, on 29 May 1863, French explorer Victor Guérin wrote that Deir al-Balah was a small, partly ruined village with a population of 350. وصف المُستكشف الفرنسيّ فيكتور جويرين في 29 مايو 1863، أي بعد ذلك بعام، دير البلح بأنّها كانت قريةً صغيرةً مُدمّرةً جُزئياً يبلغ عدد سكانها 350 نسمة.
The first Ottoman tax census in 1525 revealed Deir al-Balah was a relatively large village with a religiously mixed population of 87 Christian families and 56 Muslim families. كشف أول تعداد سكاني عثماني عام 1525 أنّ دير البلح كانت قريةً كبيرةً نسبياً في ذلك الوقت، إذ كان يقطنها 87 عائلة مسيحيّة و56 عائلة مُسلمة.
In the 1997 census by the Palestinian Central Bureau of Statistics (PCBS) Deir al-Balah's population was recorded as 42,839, a figure which included the adjacent Deir al-Balah Camp (the smallest refugee camp in the Gaza Strip.) وفي التعداد الذي أجراه الجهاز المركزي للإحصاء الفلسطيني عام 1997 كان عدد سُكّان المدينة 42,839 نسمة، بما في ذلك مخيم دير البلح (أصغر مخيم لاجئين في قطاع غزة).
In the lead-up to the 1948 Arab-Israeli War, residents of Deir al-Balah participated in a local attack against the nearby kibbutz of Kfar Darom, despite being discouraged by Egyptian Army officers, but they were repelled and suffered casualties. شارك أهالي دير البلح في الفترة التي سبقت الحرب العربية الإسرائيلية عام 1948 في هجوم محليّ على كيبوتس كفار داروم المجاور بالرغم من مُعارضة ضُبّاط الجيش المصري، لكنّ الهجمة صُدّت.
