The battle was the culmination of several weeks of fighting between the Zanj rebels and local defenders in the villages and canals of southern Iraq. كانت المعركة تتويجا لعدة أسابيع من القتال بين المتمردين فيما يسمى ساحل الزنج والمدافعين المحليين في القرى والقنوات في جنوب العراق.

It is certain that large numbers of slaves were exported from eastern Africa; the best evidence for this is the magnitude of the Zanj revolt in Iraq in the 9th century, though not all of the slaves involved were Zanj. ومن المؤكد أن عدداً هائلاً من العبيد كانوا قد صُدّروا من شرق أفريقيا، وتُقدم ثورة الزنج في العراق في القرن التاسع الدليل الأفضل على ذلك، رغم أنها لم تقتصر على العبيد الزنوج فقط، ولكن لا يتوفر إلى القليل من الأدلة حول الجزء المحدد من شرق أفريقيا الذي جُلب منه الزنج.
