• By the 16th century, the Ottomans had become a serious threat to the European powers, with Ottoman ships sweeping away Venetian possessions in the Aegean and Ionian seas and Ottoman-supported Barbary pirates seizing Spanish possessions in the Maghreb.
  بحلول القرن السادس عشر، أصبح العثمانيون يشكلون تهديدا حقيقيا للقوى الأوروبية مع إبحار السفن العثمانية في مياه البندقية في بحر إيجة والبحر الأيوني، ومع دعم العثمانيين للقراصنة الذين يستولون على الممتلكات الإسبانية في المغرب.
• Greek colonies and communities have been historically established on the shores of the Mediterranean Sea and Black Sea, but the Greek people have always been centered on the Aegean and Ionian seas, where the Greek language has been spoken since the Bronze Age.
  تاريخياً تم إنشاء مستوطنات إغريقية في مناطق واسعة من البحر المتوسط والبحر الأسود لكن ظل تركز العرق اليوناني في المناطق المحاذية لبحر أيجة والبحر الأيوني، حيث تم التحدث باللغة اليونانيَّة منذ العصر البرونزي.
• With the rise of Turkish power in Anatolia, Cappadocia slowly became a tributary to the Turkish states that were established to the east and to the west; some of the population was forcibly converted to Islam with the remainder forming the Cappadocian Greek population.
  ومع تعاظم القوة التركية في الأناضول، تحولت كبادوكيا مع مر الزمن إلى منطقة تابعة للدول التركية التي قامت إلى شرق الأناضول وغربها، وقد تحول بعض سكانها إلى الديانة الإسلامية، لكن الأقوام اليونانية البيزنطية انتقلت إلى سواحل البحر الأيوني.
