• After the French Revolution, the idea that human virtue could be created by human reason alone independently from traditional religious institutions, attributed by opponents of the Revolution to Enlightenment philosophes such as Rousseau, was violently attacked by influential religious and political conservatives, such as Edmund Burke and Joseph de Maistre, as a deification or idolatry of humanity.
  بعد الثورة الفرنسية، لاقت الفكرة القائلة بإمكانية إيجاد الفضيلة الإنسانية بواسطة العقل البشري وحده بمعزل عن المؤسسات الدينية التقليدية، والمنسوبة لفلاسفة معارضين للثورة التنويرية مثل روسو، لاقت هجوماً عنيفاً، بوصفها تأليهاً للبشر، من قبل محافظين ذوي نفوذ سياسي وديني مثل إدموند بيرك وجوزيف دي مايستر.
• He gave another exhibition of his works in St Petersburg in 1874, where two of his paintings, namely, The Apotheosis of War, dedicated "to all conquerors, past, present and to come," and Left Behind, the picture of a dying soldier deserted by his fellows, were denied a showing on the grounds that they portrayed the Russian military in a poor light.
  وأقام معرضاً آخر لأعماله في سانت بطرسبرغ عام 1874، حيث مُنعت لوحتين من العرض، الأولى باسم تأليه الحرب، إلى "جميع الفاتحين، في الماضي والحاضر والمستقبل"، والثانية باسم ترك وحيداً، صورة لجندي يحتضر بعد أن تركه زملائه، لتصويرهما الجيش الروسي في حالة ضعف.
