Accusations of infanticide in the pre-Islamic era have been passed down through generations of Arabs legitimizing these actions; however, many of the allegations are unsubstantiated and arbitrary. وأد البنات الاتهامات وأد في العصر الجاهلي قد تنتقل عبر الأجيال من الشريعة العربية لهذه الأعمال، إلا أن العديد من هذه الشرائع لا أساس لها وتعد تعسفية.

In 1878, French Jesuit missionary Gabriel Palatre collected documents from 13 provinces, and the Annales de la Sainte-Enfance (Annals of the Holy Childhood) also found evidence of infanticide in Shanxi and Sichuan. في عام 1878، جمع المبشر اليسوعي الفرنسي غابرييل بالاتر وثائق من 13 إقليم، وقد وجدت جمعية الطفولة المقدسة دليلا على وأد الأطفال في شانشي وسيتشوان.
With the arrival of Christian missionaries in the late sixteenth century, the missionaries discovered female infanticide was being practiced – newborns were seen thrown into rivers or onto rubbish piles. عندما وصل المبشرون المسيحيون في نهاية القرن السادس عشر، اكتشفوا أن وأد البنات كان قيد الممارسة –حيث كانت ترمى الأطفال حديثة الولادة في الأنهار أو في أكوام القمامة.
In 2010, the National Crime Records Bureau reported approximately 100 male and female infanticides, producing an official rate of less than one case of infanticide per million people. في عام 2010 قدم مكتب تسجيل الجرائم القومي مئة بلاغًا لعمليات وأد سواء ذكور او إناث مما تسبب فيما بعد في نقص معدل الوأد إلي نسبه عملية واحده لكل مليون فرد.
Fears were expressed by politicians in 1929 of an increase in criminal abortions and infanticide following the passing of the Criminal Law Amendment Act which prohibited all appliances and substances for contraception; no exceptions whatsoever were made. أعرب السياسيون عن مخاوفهم عام 1929 من زيادة في حالات الإجهاض الجنائي والوأد كنتيجة لتوقف العمل بالتعديلات القانونية التي حظرت كل الأدوات والمواد التي تؤدي لمنع الحمل، دون أي استثناءات.
Poverty, the dowry system, births to unmarried women, deformed infants, famine, lack of support services and maternal illnesses such as postpartum depression are among the causes that have been proposed to explain the phenomenon of female infanticide in India. الفقر ،وعادة تقديم المهور ،و حمل النساء الغيرمتزوجات ،والأطفال المشوهه ،والمجاعات ،ونقص خدمات الدعم ،وأمراض الأمهات مثل اكتئاب ما بعد الولادة تعد من بين الاسباب التي قادت المجتمع الهندي إلي عادة وأد الإناث.
He later recalled being affected by the widespread infanticide of baby girls, saying "Unwanted female infants were disposed of by throwing them through a small hole in one of the dozens of stone huts erected for the purpose around the countryside." وأشار في وقت لاحق ان تتأثر وأد البنات الطفل على نطاق واسع، وقال "تم التخلص الرضع الإناث غير المرغوب فيها عن طريق رمي لهم من خلال ثقب صغير في واحدة من عشرات الأكواخ الحجرية التي اقيمت لهذا الغرض في جميع أنحاء الريف".
Although the state has taken steps to abolish the dowry system, the practice persists, and for poorer families in rural regions female infanticide and gender selective abortion is attributed to the fear of being unable to raise a suitable dowry and then being socially ostracized. ورغم الخطوات التي تتخذها الحكومة لإلغاء نظام المهور، فإن النظام لا يزال قائما، وبالنسبة للعائلات الأكثر فقرا في المناطق الريفية فإن وأد البنات والإجهاض على أساس الجنس يرتبط بالخوف من عدم المقدرة على تجميع مهر مناسب، وما يترتب على ذلك من نبذ اجتماعي.
