The first hot air balloon in Finland (and in the whole Swedish kingdom) was made in Oulu (Uleåborg) in 1784, only a year after it was invented in France. صـُنع أول منطاد هواء ساخن في فنلندا (وفي المملكة السويدية بأسرها) في مدينة أولو سنة 1784، بعد سنة واحدة فقط من اختراعه في فرنسا.
The Soviet objective to cut Finland in half across the Oulu region – while appearing reasonable on a map, this was inherently unrealistic, as the region was mostly forested marshland, with its road network consisting mainly of logging trails. وإن بدى معقولاً على الخريطة، كان غير واقعياً أصلاً، فالمنطقة كانت أرض مستنقعات حرجية في معظمها، وشبكة طرقها تتكون أساساً من مسارات ضيقة شـُـقـّت بقطع الأشجار.
