• Italian poet Dante Alighieri (1265–1321), noted it in his famous work, the Divine Comedy, in which St. Thomas Aquinas cautions Dante upon meeting in Paradise, "opinion—hasty—often can incline to the wrong side, and then affection for one's own opinion binds, confines the mind".
  ذَكَرَها الشاعر الإيطالي دانتي أليغييري (1265- 1321) في كتابه الشهير الكوميديا الإلهية، حيث يقوم القديس توما الأكويني بتحذير دانتي عند لقائهما في الجنة، "الرأي- المتسرِّع- غالبًا ما يميل للجانب الخاطئ، ثم تقوم مشاعر الشخص نحو آرائه الخاصّة برَبط عقله وتقييده."
• Opponents to suicide include Christian philosophers such as Augustine of Hippo, Thomas Aquinas, Immanuel Kant and, arguably, John Stuart Mill – Mill's focus on the importance of liberty and autonomy meant that he rejected choices which would prevent a person from making future autonomous decisions.

• In most forms of Christianity, suicide is considered a sin, based mainly on the writings of influential Christian thinkers of the Middle Ages, such as St. Augustine and St. Thomas Aquinas, but suicide was not considered a sin under the Byzantine Christian code of Justinian, for instance.

• At the age of five Thomas began his early education at Monte Cassino but after the military conflict between the Emperor Frederick II and Pope Gregory IX spilled into the abbey in early 1239, Landulf and Theodora had Thomas enrolled at the studium generale (university) recently established by Frederick in Naples.
