• Geologically, there are other undersea geomorphological features such as the continental shelves, the deep ocean trenches, and the undersea mountain ranges (for example, the mid-Atlantic ridge and the Emperor Seamounts) which are not considered to be part of the ocean basins; while hydrologically, oceanic basins include the flanking continental shelves and shallow, epeiric seas.
  ومن الناحية الجيولوجية يوجد مظاهر مختلفة من ناحية تشكيل الأرض تقع تحت سطح البحر مثل المنحدرات القارية, والخنادق المحيطية العميقة, وسلاسل الجبالالواقعة تحت سطح البحر (على سبيل المثال أعراف منتصف الأطلنطي) والتي لا تعتبر جزءًا من الحوض المحيطي، ولكن من الناحية الهيدرولوجية تتضمن الأحواضُ المحيطيةُ المنحدراتِ المحيطية الجانبية والبحار الضحلة.
