  يُعرِّف عالم الاجتماع إرفنغ غوفمان مصطلح "وصمة" بأنه سمة ذات سمعة عميقة، فالشخص الموصوم هو شخص غير مقبول ولا يحظى باحترام ومراعاة الآخرين من أقرانه، لأنه غير مؤهَّل للقبول الاجتماعيّ.
