In April 2002, the parties of the UN CBD adopted the recommendations of the Gran Canaria Declaration Calling for a Global Plant Conservation Strategy, and adopted a 16-point plan aiming to slow the rate of plant extinctions around the world by 2010. في أبريل 2002 اعتمدت الأطراف في اتفاقية التنوع البيولوجي التابع للأمم المتحدة توصيات إعلان غران كناريا للدعوة إلى الاستراتيجية العالمية لحفظ النبات واعتمدت خطة من 16 نقطة تهدف إلى إبطاء معدل انقراض النباتات في جميع أنحاء العالم بحلول عام 2010.

Studying the association between Earth climate and extinctions over the past 520 million years, scientists from the University of York write, "The global temperatures predicted for the coming centuries may trigger a new ‘mass extinction event’, where over 50 per cent of animal and plant species would be wiped out." تناولت دراسة العلاقة بين حرارة الأرض المناخ والانقراض الجماعى على مدى 250 مليون سنة قام بها علماء من جامعة يورك ان الارتفاع المتوقع في درجات الحرارة العالمية خلال القرون القادمة قد يؤدي إلى حدوث انقراض جماعى حيث سيكون أكثر من 50 في المائة من الأنواع النباتية والحيوانية على المحك."
