• During the 2004 Summer Olympics Queen Mary 2 sailed to Athens and docked at Piraeus for two weeks for use as a floating hotel, serving the then Prime Minister of the United Kingdom Tony Blair and his wife Cherie, French President Jacques Chirac, then United States President George W. Bush, and the United States Olympic men's basketball team.

• The Great Idea (Μεγάλη Ιδέα), the dream of uniting all Greek populations of the Ottoman Empire, thereby restoring the Byzantine Empire under Christian rule, led him to contemplate entering the Crimean War on the side of Russia against Turkey and its British and French allies in 1853; the enterprise was unsuccessful, and resulted in renewed intervention by the two Great Powers and a second blockade of Piraeus port, forcing Greece to neutrality.
  كانت فكرة ميغالي (Μεγάλη Ιδέα) القائمة حول توحيد كامل الشعب اليوناني في الدولة العثمانية لاستعادة الإمبراطورية البيزنطية قد جعلت أوتو ينظر في احتمال دخول حرب القرم إلى جانب روسيا ضد تركيا وحلفائها الفرنسيين والبريطانيين عام 1853، انتهت بالفشل وأدت إلى تدخل القوتان العظمتان من جديد كما أدت إلى حصار ميناء بيرايوس ما أرغم اليونان على اتخاذ موقف محايد.
