• Other forms of official discrimination against the Sri Lankan Tamils included the state-sponsored colonization of traditional Tamil areas by Sinhalese peasants, the banning of the import of Tamil-language media and the preference given by the 1978 Constitution of Sri Lanka to Buddhism, the main religion followed by the Sinhalese.
  شملت الأشكال الأخرى من التمييز ضد التاميل السريلانكيين نقل الفلاحين السنهاليين إلى المناطق التاميلية، حظر وسائل الإعلام الناطقة باللغة التاميلية، وإقرار الديانة البوذية، وهو الدين الذي يعتنقه أغلب السنهاليين، ديانة رسمية للدولة في الدستور السريلانكي الذي أقر قي 1978.
• Tamils' knowledge of English and education came from the very American missionary activity by overseas Christians that the British were concerned will anger the Sinhalese and destroy their trading relationships, so they sent them to the Tamil areas instead to teach, thinking it would have no consequences and due to their small numbers.
  ولقد جاءت معرفة التاميلين باللغة الإنجليزية والتعليم عن طريق الحملات التبشيرية الأمريكية من قبل المسيحيين في الخارج، الأمر الذي أثار قلق البريطانيين في أن ذلك سوف يُغضب السنهاليين ويخرب علاقاتهم التجارية، لذلك أرسلوهم إلى مناطق التاميل ليعلموهم ظنا منهم بأنه لن تكون هناك أية عواقب بسبب أعدادعم القليلة.
• However, the Sinhalese in fact benefitted from trade and plantation cultivations over the rest of the other groups and their language and culture as well as the religion of Buddhism was fostered and made into mediums for schools over the Tamil language, which did not have the same treatment and Tamils learned English instead as there was no medium for Tamil until near independence.
  لكن في الحقيقة إن السنهاليين كانوا يستفيدون من التجارة والزراعة على حساب الفئات الأخرى، وكانت تهيمن لغتهم وثقافتهم وديانتهم البوذية في البلاد، بل حتى أن لغتهم تضمنتها المناهج الدراسية بدلا من اللغة التاميلية التي لم تلقَ نفس المعاملة، وكان التاميليون يتعلمون اللغة الإنجليزية لأنه لم تكن توجد وسائط باللغة التاميلية إلى ما يقارب فترة الاستقلال.
