The Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty states that "Each of the Parties to the Treaty undertakes to pursue negotiations in good faith on effective measures relating to cessation of the nuclear arms race at an early date and to nuclear disarmament, and on a treaty on general and complete disarmament." تنص معاهدة عدم انتشار الأسلحة النووية على أن "كل طرف من الأطراف في المعاهدة يتعهد بمواصلة المفاوضات بحسن نية بشأن التدابير الفعالة المتعلقة بوقف سباق التسلح النووي في وقت مبكر ونزع السلاح النووي و نزع السلاح الكامل ".
