The center was previously known as the Dryden Flight Research Center (DFRC) from March 26, 1976, in honor of Hugh L. Dryden, a prominent aeronautical engineer who at the time of his death in 1965 was NASA's deputy administrator. كان المركز يعرف سابقاً باسم مركز درايدن لبحوث الطيران في 26 مارس 1976 تكريماً لشركة هيو درايد وهو مهندس طيران بارز كان في وقت وفاته في عام 1965 نائب مدير وكالة ناسا.
