In 1506 a Portuguese fleet under the command of Tristão da Cunha and Afonso de Albuquerque, conquered Socotra at the entrance of the Red Sea and Muscat in 1507, having failed to conquer Ormuz, following a strategy intended to close the entrances to the Indian Ocean. احتل أسطول برتغالي بقيادة ترستاو دا كونها وألفونسو دي ألبوكيرك كلا من سقطرى عند مدخل البحر الأحمر سنة 1506 ثم مسقط سنة 1507، واحتل هرمز ولكنه فشل في اخضاعها لفترة طويلة بعد وضع استراتيجية تهدف إلى إغلاق مداخل المحيط الهندي.
The two monetary authorities that preceded the establishment of the Central Bank of Oman, namely the Muscat Currency Authority in 1970 and the Oman Currency Board in 1972, were not vested with full banking status, but, they had well prepared the ground for the emergence of the Central Bank of Oman. ولقـد سبق إنشـاء البنـك المركزي العمانـي هيئتين رسميتين همـا "سلطة نقد مسقط" التي أُنشئت في عام 1970م، و"مجلس النقد العماني" الذي أنشئ في عام 1972م، وبالرغم من أنهما لم يتمتعا بصلاحيات مصرفية كاملة إلا إنهما مهدا الطريق لظهور البنك المركزي العماني.
