Research conducted by several Finnish and Russian historians later concluded that the shelling was a false flag operation carried out from the Soviet side of the border by an NKVD unit with the purpose of providing the Soviet Union with a casus belli and a pretext to withdraw from the non-aggression pact. خلصت الأبحاث التي أجراها لاحقاً العديد من المؤرخين الفنلنديين والروس أن القصف نـُفذ من الجانب السوفياتي من الحدود من قبل وحدة تتبع مفوضية الشعب للشؤون الداخلية السوفيتية بهدف توفير سبب للحرب وذريعة للاتحاد السوفيتي للانسحاب من معاهدة عدم الاعتداء.
