After colonization of Libya by Italy, opponents of Italian colonial rule from Tripolitania and Cyrenaica combined forces in 1922, with Senussi leader Omar Mukhtar leading the revolt against Italian forces in Libya. بعد استعمار ليبيا من قبل إيطاليا قاد معارضي الاستعمار الإيطالي في إقليم طرابلس القوات المشتركة عام 1922 ثم تزعم فيما بعد القائد عمر المختار حركة المقاومة الليبية ضد الاستعمار.
Under the terms of the 1947 peace treaty with the Allies, Italy, which hoped to maintain the colony of Tripolitania and France, which wanted the Fezzan, relinquished all claims to Libya. وفقا لأحكام معاهدة 1947 للسلام مع الحلفاء فان إيطاليا كانت تأمل في الحفاظ على مستعمرتها في إقليم طرابلس في حين أرادت فرنسا الاحتفاظ بفزان، تخلت عن كل مطالبها في ليبيا.
In 1934, Italy adopted the name "Libya" (used by the Ancient Greeks & Romans for all of North Africa, except Egypt) as the official name of the colony (made up of the three provinces of Cyrenaica, Tripolitania and Fezzan). في عام 1934، اعتمدت إيطاليا الإسم التاريخي القديم للبلاد " ليبيا" (الذي استخدمه الإغريق لمناطق غرب وادي النيل وشمال أفريقيا) ليكون الإسم الرسمي للمستعمرة ( والتي تكونت من ثلاث مقاطعات قورينائية برقة لاحقًا،طرابلس وفزان).
