• Haydar also ordered his sniper platoons which were deployed by parachute or from helicopters, to take up key positions near the residences of known Defense Company commanders in order to psychologically terrorize them.

• Haydar deployed his Special Forces against the Defense Companies of Rifaat on the streets of Damascus, using his Anti-Tank platoons to directly challenge Rifaat's T-72 Tank units which were threatening government buildings.

• After joining the army, Shawkat began working his way up through the ranks, and by 1982 he was an officer in the Defense Companies paramilitary force headed by Rifaat al-Assad, the brother of Syrian President Hafez al-Assad.
  بعد انضمامه إلى الجيش؛ بدأَ شوكت يشق طريقه من خلال الرتب حيث عُيّن كضابط عام 1982 في سرايا الدفاع وهي قوة شبه عسكرية كان يرأسها رفعت الأسد شقيق الرئيس السوري حافظ الأسد.
• The Defense Companies under Rifaat's command began setting up checkpoints and roadblocks in Damascus, began to forcibly occupy State buildings, Police Stations, began to disarm the Police, and even tried to infiltrate his forces into the Defence Ministry HQ.
  بدأت سرايا الدفاع تحت قيادة رفعت بوضع نقاط التفتيش وحواجز الطرق في دمشق، بدأت تحتل بالقوة المباني الحكومية ومراكز الشرطة، وبدأت في نزع سلاح الشرطة، وحتى حاولوا التسلل إلى مقر وزراة الدفاع .
• While the Special Forces deployed anti-Tank platoons on the streets of Damascus to confront Rifaat's armoured columns and surrounded Rifaat's bases with snipers, Fayadh's armoured forces provided the armoured back-up and firepower to completely insulate Damascus from the outside, so that Defense Company units outside of Damascus ( in Lebanon and further north) could not come inside Damascus, and the 30,000 or so of Rifaat's forces within the environs of Damascus were effectively trapped.
  في حين قامت القوات الخاصة بنشر فصائل مضادة للدبابات في شوارع دمشق لمواجهة أرتال رفعت المدرعة وأحاطت بقواعد رفعت مع القناصة، زودت قوات فياض المدرعة الدعم المدرع والقوة النارية لعزل دمشق بالكامل من الخارج، لكي لا تستطيع وحدات سرايا الدفاع خارج دمشق (في لبنان وأبعد شمالاً) أن تأتي داخل دمشق ومحاصرة الـ30،000 أو نحو ذلك من القوات التابعة لرفعت ضمن ضواحي دمشق عملياً.
