  وكلمة عصبية المنشأ تعني أن المشكلة تنشأ بسبب وجود مشكلة في العصبون، وكلمة ظلع تعني العرج، لأن المريض يشعر بتشنج أو ضعف مؤلم في الساقين.
• The prognosis for patients with peripheral vascular disease due to atherosclerosis is poor; patients with intermittent claudication due to atherosclerosis are at increased risk of death from cardiovascular disease (e.g. heart attack), because the same disease that affects the legs is often present in the arteries of the heart.
  يُعتبر مآل المرض في الأشخاص المصابين بمرض الشريان المحيطي بسبب تصلب الشرايين سيئا؛ فالمرضى الذين يعانون من الظلع المتقطع بسبب تصلب الشرايين هم في خطر متزايد من الموت بسبب أمراض القلب والأوعية الدموية (مثل النوبة القلبية)، لأن نفس المرض الذي يؤثر على الساقين غالبا ما تكون موجودة في شرايين القلب.
