وأد البنات

• With the arrival of Christian missionaries in the late sixteenth century, the missionaries discovered female infanticide was being practiced – newborns were seen thrown into rivers or onto rubbish piles.
  عندما وصل المبشرون المسيحيون في نهاية القرن السادس عشر، اكتشفوا أن وأد البنات كان قيد الممارسة –حيث كانت ترمى الأطفال حديثة الولادة في الأنهار أو في أكوام القمامة.

  وأشار في وقت لاحق ان تتأثر وأد البنات الطفل على نطاق واسع، وقال "تم التخلص الرضع الإناث غير المرغوب فيها عن طريق رمي لهم من خلال ثقب صغير في واحدة من عشرات الأكواخ الحجرية التي اقيمت لهذا الغرض في جميع أنحاء الريف".
• Although the state has taken steps to abolish the dowry system, the practice persists, and for poorer families in rural regions female infanticide and gender selective abortion is attributed to the fear of being unable to raise a suitable dowry and then being socially ostracized.
  ورغم الخطوات التي تتخذها الحكومة لإلغاء نظام المهور، فإن النظام لا يزال قائما، وبالنسبة للعائلات الأكثر فقرا في المناطق الريفية فإن وأد البنات والإجهاض على أساس الجنس يرتبط بالخوف من عدم المقدرة على تجميع مهر مناسب، وما يترتب على ذلك من نبذ اجتماعي.
