  فحتَّى في البلدان المُتقدِّمة تترافق ظواهر الحمل والولادة مع مخاطر كبيرة لوفيات الأمهات (وفيات الأمومة أوخلال النفاس)، إذ تُقدَّر حالات وفيّات الأمهات خلال النِفَاس بُأكثر من ربع مليون وفاة كلَّ عام، مع وجود اختلافات كبيرة في هذه الأرقام بين البلدان النامية والمُتقدِّمة.
