At the time this was considered impossible because it seemed to go against the second law of thermodynamics, which says that in a closed system the entropy will only increase over time, causing the components in the mixture to distribute themselves till equilibrium is gained and making any changes in the concentration impossible. وفي تلك الفترة كان ذلك أمرًا مستحيلاً في نظر العلماء لأنه يبدو وكأنه يتعارض مع القانون الثاني للديناميكا الحرارية الذي يقول بأنه في أي نظام مغلق تزداد الإنتروبيا فقط بمرور الوقت ما يؤدي إلى توزع مكونات المزيج حتى تصل إلى حالة التوازن وبالتالي استحالة حدوث أية تغييرات في التركيز.
In this direction, although life's dynamics may be argued to go against the tendency of second law, which states that the entropy of an isolated system tends to increase, it does not in any way conflict or invalidate this law, because the principle that entropy can only increase or remain constant applies only to a closed system which is adiabatically isolated, meaning no heat can enter or leave. وعل هذا السبيل فربما يبدو أن مسيرة الحياة تتعارض مع القانون الثاني للترموديناميكا والذي ينص على أن انتروبية نظام ما معزول تميل إلى الزيادة طبيعيا ، وإنما لا يوجد تعارض مع هذا القانون لأن مبدأ ان الانتروبيا يمكن أن تزداد أو تبقى ثابتة فقط فهذ ينطبق فقط على نظام مغلق الذي من صفاته أنه لا تنتقل إليه حرارة من الخارج إلى الداخل ولا انتقال حرارة من الداخل إلى الخارج.
