During April 2005, after the Sudan government signed a ceasefire agreement with Sudan People's Liberation Army which led to the end of the Second Sudanese Civil War, the African Union Mission in Sudan (AMIS) force was increased by 600 troops and 80 military observers. خلال أبريل 2005، بعد توقيع الحكومة السودانية اتفاقا لوقف إطلاق النار مع جيش التحرير الشعبي السوداني الذي أدى إلى نهاية الحرب الأهلية السودانية الثانية، زاد عدد قوة مهمة الاتحاد الأفريقي في السودان حيث أصبح يصل إلى 600 جندي و 80 مراقب عسكري.

On 19 May 2011, militants reportedly affiliated with the Sudan People's Liberation Army attacked a convoy of mixed Sudanese Army and UNMIS vehicles 10 km north of Abyei town as they withdrew from the area's administrative centre, drawing sharp condemnation from both the Sudanese government and the United Nations. وفي 19 مايو 2011, أفادت تقارير بأن متشددين تابعين لما يسمى جيش التحرير الشعبي السوداني هاجمو قافلة و مركبات للجيش السوداني و بعثة الأمم المتحدة في السودان على بعد 10 كم من شمال مدينة أبيي، و قوبل هذا بإدانة من كل من الحكومة السودانية و الأمم المتحدة.
