• Because mechanical refrigeration is energy intensive, active collectors are typically restricted to places where there is no supply of water that can be desalinated or purified at a lower cost and that are sufficiently far from a supply of fresh water to make transport uneconomical.
  يستهلك التبريد الميكانيكي الكثير من الطاقة، لذا ينحصر استخدام المجمعات النشطة على المناطق التي لا يوجد بها مصدر لمياه يمكن تحليتها أو تنقيتها بتكلفة أقل، كذلك المناطق البعيدة عن مصادر المياه العذبة بحيث يصبح نقل المياه مكلفًا جدًا.

  ويعرف مصطلح القناة في هذا السياق بأنه أي نفق أو قناة أو خط أنابيب أو قناة أو مسيل أو خندق أو ما شابه ذلك من نقل المياه التي يتم تشغيلها من أجل توزيع المياه للاستهلاك الزراعي أو المحلى أو الصناعي وليس أساسا لتوليد الطاقة.

  على افتراض ان العملية التي تنقل المياه إلى الأرض كانت مشتركة بين جميع الكواكب القريبة من المنطقة القابلة للسكني، يقدر أن الماء السائل يمكن أن يكون موجودًا على سطحها لمدة تصل إلى 600 مليون سنة أثناء و بعد فترة قصيرة من أواخر القصف الشديد الذي يمكن أن يكون ما يكفي من الوقت من أجل حياة بسيطة .
