• The government offered Dreyfus a choice between a pardon (rather than exoneration), which would allow him to go free (provided that he admit to being guilty), or facing a re-trial in which he was sure to be convicted again.
  وعرضت الحكومة عفوا لدريفوس (ولكنه لم يتم تبرئته) ،و قيل له إنه يمكنه أن يقبل العفو فيصبح حرا ولكنه في نفس الوقت يعترف بأنه مذنب، أو أن يقبل بإعادة المحاكمة والتي كان من المؤكد أنه سيدان فيها من جديد.
• It opened murder and certain other serious crimes (including manslaughter, kidnapping, rape, armed robbery, and some drug crimes) to a second prosecution, regardless of when committed, with two conditions – the retrial must be approved by the Director of Public Prosecutions, and the Court of Appeal must agree to quash the original acquittal because of new and compelling evidence.
  في إعادة المحاكمة يجب أن تتم الموافقة من قبل مدير النيابات العامة، ومحكمة الاستئناف يجب أن توافق على إلغاء أحكام البراءة الأصلية بسبب أى أدلة دامغة جديدة .
