On 26 July 1956, Nasser nationalized the Suez Canal, following the withdrawal of an offer by Britain and the United States to fund the building of the Aswan Dam, which was in response to Egypt's new ties with the Soviet Union. في 26 يوليو 1956، أممم ناصر قناة السويس، بعد سحب العرض الذي تقدمت به بريطانيا والولايات المتحدة لتمويل بناء سد أسوان، والتي كانت استجابة لعلاقات مصر الجديدة مع الاتحاد السوفيتي.
The construction of the Aswan High Dam across the Nile River in the 1960s reduced the inflow of freshwater and nutrient-rich silt from the Nile into the Eastern Mediterranean, making conditions there even more like the Red Sea and worsening the impact of the invasive species. وقد سبب بناء السد العالي في أسوان الذي يقطع نهر النيل في الستينات إلى خفض تدفق المياه العذبة والطمي الغنية بالعناصر المغذية من النيل إلى شرق المتوسط مما يجعل ظروف تأثير الكائنات المجتاحة تتفاقم.
The Old Aswan Dam partially stored the waters of the Nile to allow the growing of multiple crops per year in the Nile Delta, while the barrages raised the water level of the Nile so that water could be diverted into large irrigation channels running in parallel to the river. حجز وخزّن سد أسوان القديم جزءاً من مياه النيل، ما أتاح زراعة محاصيل متعددة سنوياً في دلتا النيل، في حين رفعت القناطر مستوى مياه النيل حتى تمكن تحويل الماء إلى قنوات ري كبيرة تعمل بصورة موازية للنهر.
