The Latgale area became politically separated during the Polish–Swedish wars, remaining part of the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth as the Inflanty Voivodeship, while the rest of Latvians lived in lands dominated by Baltic German nobility. كانت لاتغاليا سياسياً خلال الحروب البولندية-السويدية جزءاً منفصلاً ضمن الكومنولث البولندي الليتواني، بينما كان باقي اللاتفيون محكومين من خلال طبقة النبلاء الألمان البلطيقيين.
The name Latvija is derived from the name of the ancient Latgalians, one of four Indo-European Baltic tribes (along with Couronians, Selonians and Semigallians), which formed the ethnic core of modern Latvians together with the Finnic Livonians. يأتي الاسم لاتفيا من اللاتغاليين القدامى وهم إحدى قبائل البلطيق الهندوأوروبية والتي شكلت مع قبائل الكورونيين والسيلونيين والسيميغاليين الجوهر العرقي للشعب اللاتفي اليوم.
Lutheranism is the main Christian denomination among ethnic Latvians due to strong historical links with the Nordic countries and Northern Germany (see Hanseatic League), while Catholicism is most prevalent in Eastern Latvia (Latgale), mostly due to Polish influence. اللوثرية هو المذهب الرئيسي بين اللاتفيين ويعود ذلك بسبب الروابط التاريخيّة القوية مع بلدان الشمال الأوروبي وألمانيا الشمالية، بينما الكنيسة الرومانية الكاثوليكية هي الأكثر انتشارًا في لاتفيا الشرقية (أتغال) ويرجع ذلك في معظمه إلى تأثير بولندا.
Among the Baltic peoples are modern Lithuanians, Latvians (including Latgalians) – all Eastern Balts – as well as the Old Prussians, Yotvingians and Galindians – the Western Balts – whose people also survived, but their languages and cultures are now extinct, and are now being assimilated into the Eastern Baltic community. كل البلطيق الشرقية - وكذلك البروسيون القدماء ، اليوتفنجيون والغالينديون - للبلطيق الغربية - التي نجا شعبها ايضاً، ولكن لغاتهم وثقافاتهم الآن انقرضت، ويجري الآن استيعابهم في مجتمع البلطيق الشرقية.
