The name of the country is derived from the Namib Desert, considered to be the oldest desert in the world. يشتق اسم البلاد من صحراء ناميب، التي تعتبر أقدم صحراء في العالم.
A 2009 genetic study on this subspecies suggests the northern Namib Desert and Etosha National Park populations each form a separate subspecies. أشارت دراسةٌ أُجريت خِلال سنة 2009م على مورثات هذه النويعة، أنَّ الجُمهرة قاطنة شمال صحراء الناميب وتلك قاطنة مُنتزه إيتوشا الوطني، قد تُشكلان نُويعتان مُنفصلتان.
They are widely distributed across the southern part of Africa, and although common nowhere, can be found in almost any type of habitat, from the Namib Desert to boulder-strewn outcrops in South Africa to thick forest. تتواجد زبابات الفيل على نطاق واسع في الجزء الجنوبي من أفريقيا ويمكن العثور عليها في أي نوع من الموائل تقريباً من صحراء ناميب إلى الصخور المتناثرة في جنوب أفريقيا إلى الغابات الكثيفة.
