Its capital was Quetzaltenango and it occupied the west of present-day Guatemala and parts of the Mexican state of Chiapas. وقد كانت عاصمتها كويزالتينانغو، الواقعة الآن في غرب غواتيمالا المعاصرة وبعض أجزاء تشياباس.
Quetzaltenango and San Marcos were placed under the command of Juan de León y Cardona, who began the reduction of indigenous populations and the foundation of Spanish towns. عين خوان دى ليون حاكمًا للكيتزاتينانغو وسان ماركوس الذى بدأ بتقليل السكان الأصليين وإنشاء المدن الإسبانية.
The state originated from the political differences and tensions between Guatemala City on one side, and Quetzaltenango and other parts of western Central America on the other. نشأت الدولة إثر الاختلافات والتوتّرات السياسية بين مدينة غواتيمالا من جهة، وكويزالتانغو وأجزاء أخرى من غرب أمريكا الوسطى من جهة أخرى.
