After the ruling Socialist Unity Party fell from power, the political progress of die Wende saw suggestions for a new national emblem. بعد سقوط حزب الوحدة الإشتراكي من السلطة، قدمت الثورة السلمية اقتراحاتٍ لشعارٍ قوميّ جديد.
The design for most characters was based on the work of caricaturist Al Hirschfeld, which production designer Richard Vander Wende also considered appropriate to the theme, due to similarities to the flowing and swooping lines found in Arabic calligraphy. معظم تصميمات الشخصيات على أساس عمل رسام الكاريكاتير أل هيرشفيلد، الذي اعتبرها مصمم الإنتاج ريتشارد فاندر مناسبة للفكرة، وذلك بسبب التشابه بين المنمنمات الفارسية والخط العربي.
