It was during this period that Chughtai became associated with the Progressive Writers' Association, having attended her first meeting in 1936 where she met Rashid Jahan, one of the leading female writers involved with the movement, who was later credited for inspiring Chughtai to write "realistic, challenging female characters". كانت هذه هي الفترة التي اصبحت فيها جغاتي منخرطة ضمن جمعية الكُتّاب التقدميون، وانضمت الى إجتماعها الأول عام 1936 حيث إلتقت برشيد جاهان، أحدى الكاتبات الرئيسيات في هذه الحركة، والتي حصلت على الثناء لاحقًا لإلهامها جغاتي في كتابة «شخصيات أنثوية حقيقية ومتحدية».
