El-Tantawy was born in Worcestershire, England, in 1980 to Egyptian parents and grew up between Egypt, Saudi Arabia and the United States. ولدت لورا الطنطاوي في رسيستيرشاير، انجلترا، في عام 1980 لأبوين مصريين وترعرعت بين مصر والمملكة العربية السعودية والولايات المتحدة.
Four days later, Al-Azhar Supreme Council, which Tantawi headed, passed a resolution banning the wearing of the niqāb in all-girl Al-Azhar classrooms and dorms. وبعد أربعة أيام، أصدر المجلس الأعلى للأزهر، الذي ترأسه طنطاوي، قرارا يحظر ارتداء النقاب في جميع الفصول الدراسية والمساكن في الأزهر.
