He worked at Atbara and Omdurman primary schools, then he went on to study at the American University of Beirut and he returned there in 1930. عمل بالتدريس في مدرسة عطبرة الوسطي وأم درمان، ثم ابتعث للدراسة في الجامعة الأميركية في بيروت وعاد منها عام 1930 م.
He was attached to the British Egyptian army and, as commanding officer of the 12th Sudanese Battalion, he fought in the Sudan at the Battle of Atbara and the Battle of Omdurman in 1898, for which he was awarded the Distinguished Service Order. كان ملتزماً بالجيش المصري البريطاني، وكضابط قيادي في الكتيبة الثانية عشرة السودانية، حارب في السودان في معركة عطبرة ومعركة أم درمان في عام 1898، والذي حصل من أجله على وسام الخدمة المتميزة.
