Diogenes said that Heraclitus flourished in the 69th Olympiad, 504–501 BCE. قال ديوجانس أن هرقليطس قد اشتهر خلال الأولمبياد اليونانية الـ 69 بتاريخ (501-504) قبل الميلاد.
German philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche wrote that Heraclitus "will remain eternally right with his assertion that being is an empty fiction". وكان الفيلسوف الألماني نيتشه يرى أن هرقليطس سيبقى محقاً إلى الأبد رغم تأكيده بأن كينونة هي خيال فارغ".
Prior to this, Heraclitus had claimed that fire or change was fundamental to our existence, created through the combination of opposite properties. قبل ذلك، إدعى هرقليطس أن النار أو التغيير الذي نشأ من خلال الجمع بين الخصائص المتضادة كان أساسيًا لوجودنا.
Heraclitus was born to an aristocratic family c. 540 BC in Ephesus, in the Persian Empire, in what is now called present-day Efes, Turkey. وُلد هرقليطس لعائلة أرستقراطية في مدينة أفسس في الإمبراطورية الفارسية، فيما يُعرف اليوم باسم أفس في تركيا.
Heraclitus regarded the soul as being a mixture of fire and water, with fire being the more noble part and water the ignoble aspect. كان هرقليطس يرى بأن الروح خليط من النار والماء حيث النار هي المكوّن الأكثر نبلاً والماء المكوّن الأكثر خِسّة.
What Heraclitus seems to be suggesting here, later interpretations notwithstanding, is that, in order for the river to remain the river, change must constantly be taking place. ما يبدو أن هرقليطس يقترحه هنا هو أنه حتى يظل النهر نفسه، لا بد أن يستمر التغير بلا انقطاع.
